The month saw 9 days with a minimum temperature below freezing. This was the coldest January and month period, since beginning weather observations here in Lakeland in 2005 and in Plant City in 1997.
The weather pattern consisted of a borderline strong El Nino (+1.9, the strongest since 1997-1998) a negative north Atlantic oscillation (-NAO) and a very negative Arctic oscillation (-AO). The weather pattern was very similar to the historically cold January 1977.
By January 13th temperatures in the Gulf Of Mexico near shore coastal region of central Florida hovered in the low 40's in Citrus County to the upper 40's in Sarasota County. Large fish kills occurred. Also hundreds of thousands of trees were killed.

8th- Light snow 10:00-11:59 pm. Minimum temperature 26 deg. at Nobleton East.
9th- Afternoon max temp 34 deg, morning min temp 32 deg. MWCF 19 deg. A mix of light rain, sleet-ice pellets, graupel, snow grains and snow fell between 12:00 am- 2:00 pm. Minimum temperature 16 deg. at Nobleton East.
10th- Below 32 deg 13.5 hours, below 28 deg 10 hours. Minimum temperature 16 deg at Nobleton East.
11th- Below 32 deg 11 hours, below 28 deg 4 hours. Minimum temperature 14 deg at Nobleton East.
